Six months ago we made our last dump run, filled our front lawn with the last of the give-away free-stuff, watched the movers load up a houseful and drive west, and then we shut the door on our Vermont home one last time. Late July can be an iffy time to drive across the stormy mid-west and most certainly the scorching west but without too much strain we arrived in our new SoCal condo unscathed. There was some lag time before the movers arrived while we “camped” in our empty place, but with makeshift “furniture” and one-skillet cooking, we did just fine. I always swore I would not move somewhere just because that’s where my children now lived, but life certainly changes when a grandchild arrives on the scene. After a year of flying back and forth, we decided he just might be reason enough to move to the Gold Coast, with the ocean biking-distance from our home and palm trees swaying under blue skies most every day. Six months in, yes, he’s worth it.

On the Eve of the Harvest Moon
They say tomorrow there will be a government shutdown. The seven GOP contenders said they are calling him Donald Duck. Beyoncé is making magic, still, shimmering in silver. Dumbledore died this time for real. Swifties are lining up to register to vote. Unions are on a winning roll. Books are banned by our own citizens like they can actually harm someone while gun purchases continue to break records. Fact checkers can’t keep up with the lies being spilled over the airwaves and sadly we live in a world of non-facts. Biden impeachment over what exactly? Yet, apples are ready to be picked in Vermont. Trees are getting their pretty red and yellow and orange on too. The last Super moon of the year is illuminating our night sky, bringing a slice of crazy too if you believe that sort of stuff. Take a breath, get outside, gaze upward to find the big blue before it fades into black, bite into a tart yet sweet Honey-crisp apple, and perhaps you’ll be fine.
Make America Delicious Again
Despite what most journalists and bloggers are writing about on this busy week, I’m focusing on food, yes delicious food. I guess getting ready for the Women’s March just makes me hungry. And not only hungry, but longing for smells and tastes that bring comfort and nostalgia along with warm and satisfying feelings that are so so so very needed during this time of upheaval and uncertainty.
