Survival? for sure

There is much discussion about the record-breaking cloudiest January since the 1950’s here in Vermont this year, and all I can say is wow, I fully appreciate and understand those Snow Birds who migrate to Florida these dark months. But as a person still actively employed, tied to this grey-scale region, I do what I can to find the tiny puffs of beauty in a muffled sky along with the delicately nuanced sparkle in the white landscape. Mostly I look inward during this wintering mode, but there are social engagements that prove to be a boon to anyone’s mood during these weeks without sunshine, and engaging in those is a must. Two good survival tips to consider during these last few wintery months: Get outside alone, but celebrate inside with your gals too.

Working alongside a dedicated crew does provide great fulfillment in my day to day, but socializing with my gals does the spirit good. Coupling the outing with seeing my painting in the latest group show even better. Whatever your passion, whatever you do to keep your heart singing, share that with your friend group. They will not let you down, and in fact, they will raise you up.  Your passion is an extension of you, so show it with aplomb. Celebrate with those who love you to build those rippling flames of joy.

Tip number three is make some juice. You know, liquid sunshine. Start by smelling that sweetness as you cut into a Florida Honeybell, and savor every sip as you drink it down. Mix it with a Ruby Red grapefruit and you will have the ultimate mood lifter. Nothing cuts the grey like orange. We love our inherited juicer from who knows when, it’s a work-horse machine that just doesn’t quit, a metaphor not lost on our soaring spirit.

My first tip is my last, on repeat. Whenever you can, get outside. Especially if that cloudy sky is streaked with blue. Look up and out. Soak in that calm vivaciousness. Remind yourself that you’re doing a fabulous job as a human being in this crazy world. Take a beat. Then turn up your pace and run like you love yourself. In a week it will be March.

  1. Do you have Sumo Citrus oranges in your area? Down here in sunny Florida, this is their time and they are wonderful! I heartily suggest you try them if you’ve not. Eaten with friends–a glorious boon to ban the wintertime blues!

  2. I have a romantic longing for some aspects of our winters in Massachusetts in high school, even with memories of slogging to and from class in the dark. Mostly I loved to go alone or with friends deep into the snowy woods or to hang out under Schell Bridge. We’ve had no snow at all here in NC since I’ve been back, but looking forward to when we eventually do.
