Self Care is Survival

No doubt you need it, self care that is. But my first question is: are you even on your own care list? Do you ever take a break just for yourself? Treat yourself to a moment in the tub or ski along a groomed trail? Well, here in Vermont, we are in the midst of the deep winter freeze, an easy time to feel defeated, but I would encourage you to gift yourself one tiny joy at least once a day. Perhaps make time for some morning yoga, or a mid-week lunch date with a friend, or even a self- massage? Don’t have time for yourself you say? Seriously, you must. Or at least I hope to encourage you to get on your own list.

I am reminded that not everyone considers an afternoon ski self care or even a luxury, but as I live in a climate where snow can be plentiful I have learned to dress appropriately and move fast enough while outside to enjoy the chilly temperatures. Whatever climate you find yourself, I hope you find a way to embrace it. Long city avenues or sandy coastal beaches to walk along, short hills or challenging mountains, get out there. Perhaps kid or grandmother in tow, but get out doors, first and foremost, and know it’s for your own joyful soul.

Life can be a mess at times. Lots of time actually, and it drains us of much of what we need to face the next mess. It is exactly in those times that you might need to say quietly and calmly, no. You might need to practice that. But often no is the best response to the demand that is being heaped on your pile. No. Nope. And then run the tub. Don’t forget to light the candle and use some geranium. If you really want to treat yourself, find a blend of essential oils that absolutely softens all the rough edges of the day. Bubbles too.

I have lots of little gifts I bestow on myself throughout my days, and some might be awesome for you, others not, but find what feeds you. A cup of warm tea, an inspiring book, a cozy robe, who knows– but instead of only thinking of everyone else in your life, allow a few selfish minutes or even hours devoted entirely to yourself. If you can’t gift yourself a moment in January, when the nights are long, the air dry and cold, then when?
