On those lucky afternoons when I can skip out the door before the sky goes back to black I climb the hill and catch the light show. Pink is everything mid-January. Deliciously fresh, a promising kiss reminding us of all that will return in a few months. If there is enough daylight I’ll descend through the open field and in and out of the small woods where I saw a bear last summer.
I know what you’re thinking, that this is just another New Year’s resolution post, with a long list that will all be given over at first light, but this is not that at all. This is about survival. January is long, dark, cold, and for the teachers/ healthcare providers/ service workers/ parents/ and everyone else functioning through this pandemic all around the globe, a tough month. So besides my all-the-time best-advice to start each day with Yoga with Adriene, I am going to share 5 survival tips I plan to use to face all that gets dished out, piled on, and added on to this rugged month.
January, I need to let you know a few facts. Sure, you’re a long and hearty month, and one that demands we play by your rules, but seriously, we all must do what we must to survive you. I get it, if you had it your way, we’d all be hibernating like bears, hunkered down, stoking a smoky fire in a clay hut. But listen January, you may be bitter and cold and rigid and frigid, but we just can’t live like that. Not really. Not this year. Sure snowbirds may fly to Miami to escape the real you, but for those of us who hang tough to tell the tale come May, we have a few tried and true strategies. For starters, we keep color inside while your landscape lays bare on the other side of our frame. That’s right. A pop of color to remind us that even January, as big and rough as you want us to believe, is temporary.
