meLiving on the East Coast there is something vital about adapting to the seasons and letting them into your very fiber: we herald July as the perfect month here in New England. The temperature is temperate, the rain only intermittent, the vegetable gardens bear gifts, the flowers transform our landscape to an Impressionist’s canvas, you know, the living is easy. And easy breeds easy… Oh, how we love easy!

Strawberry Fields Forever

farmstandVermont is “Pick Your Own” territory: from summer berries to fall apples we have the opportunity to visit farms and orchards to handpick any number of fruit, much of it organic.

Despite a very wet June the strawberry crop at River Berry Farm was coming beautifully, although later than typical. In between the rain storms rolling through our valley I had a fortuitous and dry hour-long window to pick six quarts of ripe and wonderfully sweet strawberries.

Pride

Rainbow_flag_and_blue_skiesPride comes in a myriad of forms for multiple occasions and in June particularly there are countless reasons to feel that swell in your chest. A month of wonderful graduations, grand weddings, and my sons would remind me, nail-biting NBA and NHL championships! As pride hits we in pews or stadium-seats cheer and clap and are caught in emotion. Gay Pride struts along our avenues in full technicolor during June too, causing us all to remember what is so easy to forget, that for many Americans who they love not only defines them, it targets them. Although the Supreme Court overturned section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), there are still many places where fear and ignorance shape our youth, dominate our lives, and restrict our liberty.
