Harbors

When you imagine harbors do you think commerce, trade, travel, or the changing landscapes of our waterfronts? The elegant white sails of the Sydney Opera House or the sturdy fishing boats along the Boston seacoast might come to mind… Port cities provide a rich history, complete with dock workers, sea captains, and a rough and tumble crew that have navigated the mysterious deep waters for decades, bringing us to and from our destinations, delivering exotic goods, or facing whatever the currents demand.

My familiar harbor surrounds New York City, the East River drifting under the Brooklyn Bridge then gliding toward the Statue of Liberty and cruising along the Hudson River. Watching the lights pop all over the city with its 8+ million population is a magnificent sight… and on this night I witnessed all that and more…

Summer Places

During these short summer months, some are lucky enough to return to the vacation spots of our youth. However, for most, those old summer haunts are long gone, vanished into the changing landscape. But, I’ve happily discovered, one can spy the shadow of our faded past, even in a new locale. For really, what does returning home mean in our increasing nomadic culture? Might not home be anyplace where the screen door bangs in an accustomed way and none of the dinner dishes in the cupboard match or where you spend the day wandering to and from the watering hole barefoot and laughing hours away with cousins? In these places, nostalgia for carefree days blooms all summer long. One whiff of a rose or hydrangea as you stroll along sandy roads and you are reminded, yes indeed, you realize why place is secondary to the familial faces knowingly smiling back. Most assuredly you discover it is the people who make the summer place feel like home.

My Memories, Dreams, and Reflections

Everywhere one can witness new parents working 24/7 to make sure their little tots have everything necessary to conquer this formidable world. Concentrating on crib innovations, stroller technology, and breathable diaper-covers, these parents are relentless consumers, all with the singular mission to aid their prodigy to the top. However, recently, my memories, dreams and reflections have reminded me that the best backdrop for our children is one where we cultivate our own passions. Yes, you read that correctly, your own. For, after all, as Carl Jung remarked, “The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.” Last week I was reminded exactly what that means to me…
