Don’t Should Me!

Enough already! On both my morning commute and my afternoon drive home, the radio DJ’s were blasting out a litany of stats on failed juicephotoresolutions! Already!?! Seriously!?! Isn’t this still the first week in January? Yes, I turned them right off…but it got me thinking.  Who says you need to start that page-a-day writing regime on January 1st or it will never happen? Who says you need to start a kale-juice fast on January 1st or never? Or make working out at the gym part of your afternoon ritual or never? Personally, with so much pressure I can’t think of a worse week to begin anything! Besides, I’m still exhausted from the frolicking fun of the last few weeks! Office parties and family gatherings, meal times that spilled right into the next meal time, or those marvelous martinis; Yes, those… True there were some sauntering mid-day walks and one night of dancing with a tiara and silk heels but mostly long late nights and up early mornings with a ton of holiday business in-between, so exhausted.

Now, my aversion to resolutions does not mean I will be eating bon-bons while watching re-runs, but perhaps I can suggest we all ease back into the healthy living we know for sure we can achieve by taking our time and selecting resolutions that we actually want to do. And so, in the spirit of true resolutions, I will make four to ease the body, mind, soul, and spirit.

Here are my gems for 2013:

  • Eat more one ingredient foods

(I probably don’t need to explain this, but just in case, this means eating broccoli or bananas, instead of a broccoli casserole or banana bread; no need for a diet if you stick to this plan 80% of the time)

  • Make time for at least one yoga class a week

(No question, my whole body feels like a million bucks from a consistent yoga practice; probably this is true for most of us, so why not keep at it?)

  • Get outside, if possible, every day, at least for long enough to take a few deep breaths and gaze mindlessly on the horizon

(I live in, hands down, in one of the most gorgeous locations on this small planet; skiing, hiking, running or swimming is all out my doorway; needless to say, taking advantage of any of these activities is the right plan for any one lucky enough to be in Vermont)

  • Drink my favorite festive martini every once in a while

(Yes, you read that right, drinking the right celebratory cocktail is always worth its place on anyone’s resolution list, for nothing lightens the load like good cheer; see my last post for two fabulous recipes, although you can concoct one for yourself sans alcohol if you prefer)

So, that’s my better the body, mind, soul and spirit resolution list, which I will begin on whichever day I decide… for everyday is a new beginning, right? Hope you create a resolution list, without the should’s, with only your want to’s. If so, 2013 is guaranteed to be a happy one for all of us!!!

  1. Sounds like a great plan! I prefer general goals for the year over resolutions but yes, even with a list of resolutions, you have ALL year to do them, not just January! So taking your time to get started is a perfectly reasonable goal too!

  2. I like the one ingredient idea. I started eating healthier when I learned how to simply stop buying junk from the market. They say people tend to eat what’s at eye-level. So on our top fridge shelf is a bag of carrots instead of candy. It works!

  3. Well said! I totally agree with you on all accounts!

I love your gems of 2013 and that they cover all spheres of well-being. And they also seem quite manageable to achieve. All the best to you! 🙂
